The electrical system warning light had gone on in my Kona EV over the weekend, and all the manual said was to take it to the dealer for evaluation. I first tried scheduling an appointment via the website, and it reminded me how the web, once a marvel, is looking awfully clunky these days. There were lots of options for services to schedule, but it wasn’t at all clear which of them I might want. Not only that, I’d only reached this page after clicking through various promotions and testimonials about how great the dealership is—in short, content designed to serve…
One of our favorite things to write about at Smart Data Collective is how AI affects video. We talked about this in one of our articles on AI in video streaming. It is fascinating to see how artificial intelligence can make something as creative as lyric video production faster and more accessible for everyone. You can now use tools that automatically sync lyrics to music, adjust visuals to rhythm, and even suggest color palettes that fit the tone of a song. There are also programs that generate entire video drafts in minutes, giving artists more time to refine their creative…
As the private cloud landscape evolves, VMware Cloud Service Providers (VCSPs) continue to look for ways to simplify operations, scale with efficiency, and deliver differentiated services to their tenants. With the release of VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.0, this is a great time for VCSPs to explore the benefits VMware vSAN offers your business. With VCF 9.0, we’re doubling down on powerful new capabilities powered by vSAN that help VCSPs modernize their infrastructure, streamline operations, and meet the dynamic demands of modern applications. As you know, the VCF license includes 1 TiB of vSAN per core, a benefit that many…
If you have two headphones, speakers, or any other Bluetooth hardware, you can now share audio between the two devices simultaneously on a Copilot+ PC. Microsoft is testing a new feature called “shared audio,” which is built on top of Bluetooth LE Audio broadcast technology. With Bluetooth LE Audio broadcast technology, Windows can now transmit an audio stream to two Bluetooth devices. Right now, if you have a Bluetooth speaker and an earbud, you can connect only one of them. Even if you manage to connect the two devices, you cannot play audio through both at the same time. This is a…

SwiftUI’s layout primitives generally don’t provide relative sizing options, e.g. “make this view 50 % of the width of its container”. Let’s build our own! Use case: chat bubbles Consider this chat conversation view as an example of what I want to build. The chat bubbles always remain 80 % as wide as their container as the view is resized: The chat bubbles should become 80 % as wide as their container. Download video Building a proportional sizing modifier 1. The Layout We can build our own relative sizing modifier on top of the Layout protocol. The layout multiplies its own proposed size…
The Wake-Up Call We All Felt On October 20, 2025, organizations across industries, from banking to streaming, logistics to healthcare, experienced widespread service degradation when AWS’s US-EAST-1 region suffered a significant outage. As the ThousandEyes analysis revealed, the disruption stemmed from failures within AWS’s internal networking and DNS resolution systems that rippled through dependent services worldwide. The root cause, a latent race condition in DynamoDB’s DNS management system, triggered cascading failures throughout interconnected cloud services. But here’s what separated teams that could respond effectively from those flying blind: actionable, multilayer visibility. When the outage began at 6:49 a.m. UTC, sophisticated…
Following yesterday’s quarterly report, Apple saw a welcome bump in its stock price. But as markets opened and the day progressed, investor sentiment appeared to shift slightly. Here are the details. No news, good news During the last few days, most tech companies had rather momentous earnings reports. Meta’s stock dropped 12%, Amazon saw a 9.5% jump, and PayPal erased the 11% it gained after announcing a partnership with OpenAI just hours before. Apple, on the other hand, saw a more muted reaction, with shares up today about 2% in pre-market trading, following yesterday’s announcement. But that slight optimism was…
Credit: CC0 Public Domain Cancer immunotherapy, which uses drugs that stimulate the body’s immune cells to attack tumors, is a promising approach to treating many types of cancer. However, it doesn’t work well for some tumors, including ovarian cancer. To elicit a better response, MIT researchers have designed new nanoparticles that can deliver an immune-stimulating molecule called IL-12 directly to ovarian tumors. When given along with immunotherapy drugs called checkpoint inhibitors, IL-12 helps the immune system launch an attack on cancer cells. Studying a mouse model of ovarian cancer, the researchers showed that this combination treatment could eliminate metastatic tumors…
“Language is not merely a set of unrelated sounds, clauses, rules, and meanings; it is a totally coherent system bound to context and behavior.” — Kenneth L. Pike Article Continues Below The web has accents. So should our design systems. Design Systems as Living Languages#section2 Design systems aren’t component libraries—they’re living languages. Tokens are phonemes, components are words, patterns are phrases, layouts are sentences. The conversations we build with users become the stories our products tell. But here’s what we’ve forgotten: the more fluently a language is spoken, the more accents it can support without losing meaning. English in Scotland…
