    National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Birmingham, July 8-9, 2026 

    Few materials events put the entire value chain in one place as effectively as this one. Over two days at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), the Advanced Materials Show ran alongside the Advanced Ceramics Show, Battery Cells and Systems Expo, and Vehicle Electrification Expo. The conference spanned six tracks: the advanced materials landscape; ceramic additive manufacturing; materials, energy, and batteries; testing and characterization; defense and aerospace; and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for materials. 

    The event’s value lies in that breadth. A single venue held the science, the characterization behind it, the AI now shaping the workflow, the national policy setting priorities, and the capital behind scale-up, allowing attendees to track a technology from synthesis to the end product. The insights below reflect where this combination generated the strongest signals.

    Advanced carbons’ shift to industrial scale 

    The dedicated advanced carbons program offered the clearest view into market maturity. Sessions shifted from property claims to production format and quality: graphene paste for easier dosing, methane-derived graphene in coatings, quality-control systems for producers and users, and a scalable route from graphene to electronics. Together, these developments show carbons reaching formats that industrial processes can accept. Innovation leaders should assess carbon suppliers based on material format and lot consistency and use this track as an annual checkpoint for routes moving to industrial scale. 

    Characterization and verification as strategic inputs 

    Testing, characterization, verification, and imaging featured prominently on the second day. Sessions included a case for materials verification as the bridge from discovery to deployment and research into multiscale in situ imaging and modeling. The event positioned measurement as a strategic input, not a closing formality. Treating verification as a shared, standards-based capability can inform whether enterprises should own metrology or use a national service. It also links measurement plans to the decision points that can change a program’s direction. 

    The AI sessions drew the line themselves 

    The AI content was refreshing for setting its own limits. A panel separating real benefits from hype, an automated experimental platform running closed-loop discovery, and a panel on AI across discovery, development, and production all located durable value in interpreting characterization data, screening candidates, and operating instrumented loops. They placed the autonomous materials designer firmly in the future. The practical takeaway reflects the event’s measured view: an AI investment is worth only the quality of the data and the workflow it sits in. 

    Capital and policy layer as key differentiators 

    The Scale-Up Accelerator, which ran alongside a national policy keynote, distinguished the show from a purely technical conference. One strand connected battery scale-up, hiring, venture capital, and bank perspectives on financing capital-intensive growth with innovator pitches. On the main stage, a government-coordinated national materials program signaled emerging public priorities and co-investment opportunities. Together, these sessions mapped the capital stack and non-dilutive funding routes that determine how far a research budget can travel. Shared facilities and matched funding can absorb some program costs and risks, while national priorities indicate where innovators should position. 

    Metamaterials as an underused design lever 

    Against a chemistry-heavy program, the metamaterials panel stood out by locating performance in structure and geometry and presenting the field as a coordinated national capability. The discussion reinforced that architecture sits alongside composition in the design space and can achieve property combinations unavailable in homogeneous materials. Metamaterials belong on the scouting agenda because a chemistry-only search leaves this lever unused. 

    What this means for Research and Development (R&D) innovation leaders 

    The unifying theme across these signals is adjacency: technical choices and their paths to market were visible within the same two days. Converting that breadth into focused decisions is central to innovation excellence.
