These automatic visual interpretations can be described collectively as the Gestalt effect, and are often associated with the idea that “the whole is other than the sum of its parts.” In other words, our perception of a scene is shaped by how elements are interpreted as a group, rather than by individual components seen in isolation.

Their gaze will follow the simplest path on the page, so it’s important to make sure any key elements you want them to see fall within that path. Since the eye is drawn to continuation, arranging elements in a line will naturally guide focus from one item to the next.
Modern brand example: E-commerce sites like Amazon apply continuity in product carousels to encourage exploration and guide visitors to related items. The same principle underpins progress bars and scrolling transitions: Instagram’s Story interface and LinkedIn’s step-by-step signup flow both rely on this sense of continuous movement to keep users engaged and oriented.

A full image doesn’t have the same effect, since we perceive it as whole and assume there’s nothing more to see.
