    Key Takeaways

    • A lack of mainframe software in CMDB (Configuration Management Database) reporting remains a critical blind spot in software asset management (SAM), compliance, and audit coverage that manual processes can’t reliably close.
    • IronstreamEnhance Visibility with Mainframe Software Inventory for ServiceNow® CMDB z/OS Software Discovery automates the delivery of mainframe software inventory directly into ServiceNow® – without requiring custom scripts, manual exports, or mainframe expertise on the SAM or ITSM side.
    • Built on ServiceNow-native architecture and available in the ServiceNow Store, Ironstream z/OS Software Discovery gives SAM, audit, security, and CMDB teams a single, trustworthy view of the full software estate.

I spent most of my career building BI and analytics platforms inside regulated banks. Operational risk dashboards, IT service management reporting, audit-grade analytics.

If there’s one thing I learned in those years, it’s this: the dashboards people trust are the ones built on data nobody had to apologize for.

The hardest part of running an analytics platform was never the visualizations. It was the upstream – making sure the data flowing in was complete, traceable, and current. The moment a senior stakeholder noticed a footnote that said “this system not included”, the whole thing started losing credibility. Once trust goes, it doesn’t come back easily.

Now that I’m on the product side at Precisely, working with IronstreamEnhance Visibility with Mainframe Software Inventory for ServiceNow® CMDB software, I see the same pattern from a different angle.

A lot of organizations running mainframe have one of those footnotes hiding in their CMDB.

That’s why I’m excited to share that you can now close that gap with Ironstream z/OS Software Discovery for ServiceNow, a new Build Partner solution available today in the ServiceNow Store.

“We’re proud to work alongside Precisely to help our shared customers unlock the full value of the ServiceNow Platform. Together, we’re combining Precisely’s deep expertise in data integrity with ServiceNow’s platform capabilities to deliver intelligent, connected experiences that drive real business value.”

    The Mainframe Blind Spot

Mainframes are one of the most instrumented platforms on the planet. Every installed software product, every version, every vendor all tracked authoritatively on the platform itself.

And yet, that z/OS software inventory rarely makes it into the CMDB because bridging mainframe environments to modern IT platforms requires tooling built specifically for that purpose.

So what happens in practice? SAM teams produce compliance reports that quietly exclude mainframes. Audit teams know the CMDB is incomplete but lack the specialized tooling to address it. IBM operations teams sit on accurate, detailed data — with no straightforward way to get it into the systems the rest of the organization relies on.

The cost doesn’t always show up on the budget sheet. But it shows up here:

    • License audits that skip mainframe software
    • Vulnerability programs that can’t see mainframe software versions
    • Compliance reports with the dreaded footnote: “mainframe not included”
    • Manual exports that are stale the moment they’re produced
    • Trust erosion as stakeholders slowly notice the gaps

Cutting corners on inventory doesn’t eliminate the risk. It just moves it down the road and multiplies it.

How does Ironstream z/OS Software Discovery Bring Mainframe Software Inventory into ServiceNow?

Ironstream z/OS Software Discovery for ServiceNow does two things, on two schedules:

    1. Ironstream collects. IronstreamEnhance Visibility with Mainframe Software Inventory for ServiceNow® CMDB pulls the mainframe software inventory from mainframe on a schedule you control – every installed product, its version, vendor, and install date. The data is gathered safely from the platform and held ready.
    2. ServiceNow picks it up. Whenever your ServiceNow® discovery runs, it picks up the latest inventory and lands it in the CMDB SAM table alongside everything else ServiceNow already manages.

No custom scripts, manual exports, or mainframe expertise required on the SAM or ITAM side.

The result: mainframe software shows up in ServiceNow® the same way the rest of your estate does. Same dashboards, workflows, and governance.

Built on ServiceNow-Native Architecture and Designed to Scale

IronstreamEnhance Visibility with Mainframe Software Inventory for ServiceNow® CMDB z/OS Software Discovery is the first ServiceNow® product released on the modern Precisely IronstreamEnhance Visibility with Mainframe Software Inventory for ServiceNow® CMDB Hub, the component we’re standardizing all ServiceNow® integrations on.

It’s built end-to-end on ServiceNow® best practices leveraging Integration Hub ETL, and the native Identification and Reconciliation Engine that already governs every other CI (configuration item) in your CMDB. Certified on the ServiceNow Store. No custom data model. No parallel logic to maintain.

Why that matters: the underlying architecture determines what’s possible next: A modern foundation built the ServiceNow way means that your new mainframe data sources can be added faster, the management experience stays consistent, and you don’t get stuck on legacy infrastructure that’s hard to evolve.

How Does IronstreamEnhance Visibility with Mainframe Software Inventory for ServiceNow® CMDB z/OS Software Discovery Benefit Your Teams?

Getting mainframe software into ServiceNow® isn’t just a technical win. It changes what your teams can actually do:

    • SAM teams finally have z/OS installed software in ServiceNow®, included in the same reconciliation, normalization, and reporting they already run for the rest of the estate
    • Audit and compliance teams get a single view of the software estate, mainframe included
    • Security teams can finally bring the mainframe into vulnerability management workflows
    • CMDB owners get a more complete, trustworthy foundation across the enterprise

Valuable insights come from trustworthy foundations and not from clever workarounds on top of incomplete data. That’s something I learned the hard way, and it’s exactly what Ironstream z/OS Software Discovery is built to deliver.

The Bigger Picture: Mainframe Belongs in the Full IT Story

Mainframes aren’t going away. The challenge has always been connecting it to the tools and workflows the rest of the organization runs on.

IronstreamEnhance Visibility with Mainframe Software Inventory for ServiceNow® CMDB z/OS Software Discovery for ServiceNow is one step in that direction, part of a broader suite that brings mainframe and IBM i platforms into ServiceNow for discovery, service mapping, and event management.

If your CMDB has a footnote that says “mainframe not included,” that’s the gap this solves.
