RockeTruck Demonstrates Latest Fuel Cell-Powered Generator

On October 29, 2025, Cleantech San Diego member RockeTruck, a developer and manufacturer of advanced power generation and conversion products, demonstrated a new electric generator powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology on the Cal State LA campus.

This marked the first public unveiling of the novel “Mobile Fuel Cell Generator” (MFCG), which uses an automotive fuel cell manufactured by American Honda Motors Company, Inc. to generate electricity on a mobile platform. RockeTruck developed the MFCG in collaboration with Cal State LA to deliver electric power when electricity from the grid is not available. The generator will be used to power homes and businesses during grid power outages caused by emergencies such as wildfires, to provide electricity for large outdoor entertainment venues, and to deliver standby backup power for critical facilities such as hospitals and data centers.

“Cal State LA is pleased to host the first public demonstration of RockeTruck’s amazing new electric generator,” said Professor David Blekhman, who manages the Hydrogen Research and Fueling Facility (HRFF) where the MFCG will be showcased on Oct. 29. The public event will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. and will include a live demonstration of the MFCG’s ability to deliver power to recharge critical devices ranging from cell phones to electric vehicles.

“RockeTruck appreciates the support of Cal State LA, Honda, and our many other development partners,” said Jurgen Schulte, RockeTruck chief engineer and principal designer of the compact generator to be demonstrated, which is small enough to be transported in the bed of a Ford F-350 pickup truck. Other RockeTruck partners contributing to MFCG development include Southern California Edison, San Diego Gas & Electric Company, and Southern California Gas Company, with public funding provided by the California Energy Commission, U.S. Department of Energy, and L.A.’s South Coast Air Quality Management District.

RockeTruck also announced that it is now taking commercial orders for the MFCG, for deliveries starting in the second quarter of 2026. The company plans to build a large fleet of generators based on the MFCG design to power outdoor events during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games (LA28).

RockeTruck, a privately held company founded in 2020 and based in Escondido, CA, also develops and manufactures advanced power converters, solid-state transformers, and energy management controls.
