    BSNL May Turn Off 3G Across India Soon

    Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), a state-run telecom operator based out of India, is now reportedly planning to turn off 3G across the country. The bedrock of BSNL’s network, for many years, has been 3G. The company only recently launched 4G in many areas, and now has close to 1 lakh live sites throughout India. According to a LiveMint report, BSNL is looking to terminate the annual maintenance contracts (AMCs) with the vendors such as Nokia and Chinese equipment maker ZTE.

    The move comes at a time when the government has already asked the private telecom operators to remove the Chinese gear from their networks in a phase wise manner. This is a huge development, and one that also raises serious questions.

    Does BSNL have enough bandwidth, capacity and coverage with 4G that it can remove 3G in the near future? Well, it is most likely going to be a phase wise removal. Especially first from the areas where 4G has already been deployed and is performing well. These areas become feasible for the company to remove 3G from.
