The Xiaomi 17 Ultra has officially launched in China, and it’s going in a much less interesting direction than I had been hoping for. And yes, the phone has been unveiled on Christmas Day. I could write a whole piece about how weird that is as a date for a major smartphone launch, but we kind of knew it was coming. Any astonishment would be wholly manufactured. I have far stronger feelings about the Xiaomi 17 Ultra’s design, which was revealed ahead of time, as well as during a brief hands-on video posted to YouTube. To be clear from the…
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), a state-run telecom operator based out of India, is now reportedly planning to turn off 3G across the country. The bedrock of BSNL’s network, for many years, has been 3G. The company only recently launched 4G in many areas, and now has close to 1 lakh live sites throughout India. According to a LiveMint report, BSNL is looking to terminate the annual maintenance contracts (AMCs) with the vendors such as Nokia and Chinese equipment maker ZTE.Read More – BSNL New Rs 251 Plan Bundles 100GB of Data and MoreThe move comes at a time when the…
The key to R1’s success was distillation, a technique that makes AI models more efficient. It works by getting a bigger model to tutor a smaller model: You run the teacher model on a lot of examples and record the answers, and reward the student model as it copies those responses as closely as possible, so that it gains a compressed version of the teacher’s knowledge. —Caiwei Chen 10. Sycophancy As people across the world spend increasing amounts of time interacting with chatbots like ChatGPT, chatbot makers are struggling to work out the kind of tone and “personality” the models should adopt. As we approach 2026, sustainability is starting to function more as a core business discipline rather than a standalone initiative. The public, private, and civic sectors are applying sustainability strategies to improve energy efficiency, reduce operating costs, strengthen supply chain resilience, and manage long-term risk — much of which is supported by advances in circularity, modern energy systems, artificial intelligence (AI), and emerging quantum technologies. But progress requires coordination, credible data, and solutions designed to scale. These needs are increasingly impacting the priorities of our customers and partners, and as a result, are now firmly on the boardroom agenda. And…
At Cisco and Splunk, we believe technology becomes truly transformative when it reaches the people solving our world’s toughest problems. That’s the principle behind the annual Splunkie Awards, where we recognize the partners and users across multiple categories — including those who push Splunk technology beyond business metrics into work that genuinely transforms how social impact organizations operate and serve their communities. This year, bitsIO was named Splunk’s Social Impact Partner of the Year, marking the third time they have won a Splunkie Award. This recognition reflects years of dedicated work closing what we call the data divide: the gap…
Support CleanTechnica’s work through a Substack subscription or on Stripe. Note: Astute readers who have been around for at least a year may recognize this article below. It’s being recycled for 2025 going into 2026. —Zach Most of us are familiar with A Christmas Carol, the story of Ebenezer Scrooge penned by Charles Dickens at a time when stories were seldom published as entire books but rather chapter by chapter in weekly newspapers. The idea was to get people to buy multiple papers over many weeks in order to maximize revenue for publishers and authors. A Christmas Carol was not…
iOS 16 beta 4 is the first SDK release that supports Live Activities. A Live Activity is a widget-like view an app can place on your lock screen and update in real time. Examples where this can be useful include live sports scores or train departure times. These are my notes on playing with the API and implementing my first Live Activity. A bike computer on your lock screen My Live Activity is a display for a bike computer that I’ve been developing with a group a friends. Here’s a video of it in action: And here with simulated data:…

Apple is sending out one of its strongest years in recent memory. The iPhone 17 series is one of its best-selling smartphone lineups in recent memory and will help it edge out arch-rival Samsung as the world’s leading smartphone vendor for the first time in over a decade. But 2025 was significant for more than just iPhones as Apple extended its lead in the ARM chipset race with the M5, which is available on a wide variety of devices ranging from iPads, MacBooks and even the updated Vision Pro. The AirPods Pro 3 brought class-leading noise cancellation and upgrades in…
New study reveals how quantum entanglement is transferred in ultrafast photoionisation experiments, offering us insights into how quantum information develops from microscopic to macroscopic scales Entanglement is transferred from photons to electrons and ions in ultrafast ionisation processes (Courtesy iStock/agsandrew) Entanglement is a phenomenon where two or more particles become linked in such a way that a measurement on one of the particles instantly influences the state of the other, no matter how far apart they are. It is a defining property of quantum mechanics, which is key to all quantum technologies and remains a serious challenge to realize in…
