36 From smartphones to cars to critical infrastructure, these early satellites power some of the most modern technologies of today GNSS is not a term that peppers media language often. Nevertheless, it underpins almost all technologies that we use in everyday life. GNSS systems are present in modern automobiles, feeding the moving maps on trip computers that tell us where to go; GNSS services in smartphones enable features like location sharing and geotagging; they’re even in small devices like Apple AirTags and Oura rings that stream location data and other metrics in real time. What is GNSS and how does…
In this article, you will learn how to build a deterministic, multi-tier retrieval-augmented generation system using knowledge graphs and vector databases. Topics we will cover include: Designing a three-tier retrieval hierarchy for factual accuracy. Implementing a lightweight knowledge graph. Using prompt-enforced rules to resolve retrieval conflicts deterministically. Beyond Vector Search: Building a Deterministic 3-Tiered Graph-RAG SystemImage by Editor Introduction: The Limits of Vector RAG Vector databases have long since become the cornerstone of modern retrieval augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, excelling at retrieving long-form text based on semantic similarity. However, vector databases are notoriously “lossy” when it comes to atomic facts,…
Z.ai is out with its next-generation flagship AI model and has named it GLM-5.1. With its combination of extensive model size, operational efficiency, and superior reasoning functions, the model represents a major step forward in large language models. The system improves upon previous GLM models by introducing an advanced Mixture-of-Experts framework, which enables it to perform intricate multi-step operations faster, with more precise results. GLM-5.1 is also powerful because of its support for the development of agent-based systems that require advanced reasoning capabilities. The model even presents new features that enhance both coding capabilities and long-context understanding. All of this…
Photo credit: OssewaAlmost everyone at some point in their career has dealt with the deeply frustrating process of moving large amounts of data from one place to another, and if you haven’t, you probably just haven’t worked with large enough datasets yet. For Andy Warfield, one of those formative experiences was at UBC, working alongside genomics researchers who were producing extraordinary volumes of sequencing data but spending an absurd amount of their time on the mechanics of getting that data where it needed to be. Forever copying data back and forth, managing multiple inconsistent copies. It is a problem that…
Posted by Jiacheng Lu, Software Engineer, Google Pixel Team Google is continuously advancing the security of Pixel devices. We have been focusing on hardening the cellular baseband modem against exploitation. Recognizing the risks associated within the complex modem firmware, Pixel 9 shipped with mitigations against a range of memory-safety vulnerabilities. For Pixel 10, Google is advancing its proactive security measures further. Following our previous discussion on “Deploying Rust in Existing Firmware Codebases”, this post shares a concrete application: integrating a memory-safe Rust DNS(Domain Name System) parser into the modem firmware. The new Rust-based DNS parser significantly reduces our security risk…
The opinions expressed here by Trellis expert contributors are their own, not those of Trellis. Brands in the personal care and beauty spaces know that most of their packaging formats—the lotion pumps, serum bottles, and powder compacts — aren’t easily recyclable. Between small sizes, special features like droppers, multi-material components like plastic and glass, and leftover product residue, this type of packaging is typically not accepted in curbside recycling programs. But now, extended producer responsibility (EPR) programs are putting pressure on brands to succeed with refill solutions. For example, under California’s landmark packaging EPR program, brands will be required to…
Lessons from building production AI systems that nobody talks about. The conversation around AI agents has moved fast. A year ago, everyone was optimizing RAG pipelines. Now the discourse centers on context engineering, MCP/A2A protocols, agentic coding tools that read/manage entire codebases, and multi-agent orchestration patterns. The frameworks keep advancing. After 18 months building the AI Assistant at Cisco Customer Experience (CX), we’ve learned that the challenges determining real-world success are rarely the ones getting attention. Our system uses multi-agent design patterns over structured enterprise data (mostly SQL, like most enterprises). The patterns that follow emerged from making that system…
If you’re reading this, you’re likely in need of a 20,000mAh power bank. Before you do a quick search on Amazon or Best Buy, you need to know these four excellent high-capacity power banks within that range so you get the most value for your money.A lot of people find it perfectly acceptable to buy any power bank, so long as it comes from a reputable name brand. Meanwhile, some people really only care about the price. But you can’t go off these factors alone in your hunt for the right 20,000mAh power bank.Price and trustworthiness of the manufacturer aside,…
Bacterial infections remain a major complication in orthopedic and maxillofacial surgery, particularly when associated with biomaterial surfaces, where they become exceedingly difficult to eradicate. Inspired by naturally occurring biocidal surface topographies, nanostructured surfaces have emerged as promising strategies for reducing the risk of infection. In this study, we investigated the potential for fine-tuning the nanostructures of calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHA) by adjusting the reaction conditions during the hydrolysis of α-tricalcium phosphate. By systematically varying synthesis parameters, including temperature, pH, duration, and nucleation seed, we generated a diverse set of nanostructured topographies. From these, three morphologies were selected: interconnected nanosheets, densely packed…
