December saw plugin EVs take 68.6% share in Sweden, up from 62.8% year-on-year. BEV share grew marginally YoY, while PHEV share increased. Full year 2025 saw EVs at 63.2% share, up from 58.4% YoY, with two thirds of the gain coming from PHEVs. Overall December auto volume was 23,877 units, down some 9% YoY. Full year 2025 auto volume was 272,998 units, up just 1% from 2024.The Volvo EX40 was the best-selling BEV in December, and also for full year 2025.

EVs At 63.2% Share In 2025

December’s auto sales saw combined plugin EVs take 68.6% share in Sweden, with full battery-electrics (BEVs) at 43.1% and plugin hybrids (PHEVs) at 25.5%. These shares compare YoY against 62.8% combined, 40.8% BEV and 22.0% PHEV.

Full year 2025 plugin share was 63.2%, up from 58.4% in 2024. BEVs barely grew share, from 35.0% to 36.5% YoY, while PHEVs grew from 23.4% to 26.7%, propping up the gain in combined share.

Some basic BEV purchase incentives have begun again in 2026, and may help get BEV sales back to a decent growth trajectory, let’s keep an eye on that.

EVs At 63.2% Share In 2025Best-Selling BEVs

The Volvo EX40 was the best-selling BEV in December, with 1,223 units, its highest volume of the year. The runners up were the Polestar 4 and the Volkswagen ID.7.

There were no significant new model debuts in December.

The final quarter of 2025 saw the Volvo EX40 in a solid lead, ahead of the Volkswagen ID.7 and the Kia EV3.

In the full year rankings, the Volvo EX40 was again the leader, with the Volkswagen ID.7 in a safe second place. The Tesla Model Y came third.

The Tesla Model Y fell from 17,676 units in 2024, to 5,859 units in 2025, a fall in volume of some two-thirds, toppling from top spot down to third place.

    Outlook

With a limited incentive scheme now back on the table for BEVs, their market share may finally get a decent lift in 2026, but we will have to see how it plays out.
